Ali Sow of the Laurier Golden Hawks men’s basketball team is the U SPORTS Male Athlete of the Month for November 2018.
Sow, the reigning OUA Rookie of the Year, is having a season for the books in his second year with the Golden Hawks. Currently leading the Hawks in scoring with 250 points on the season, Sow sits in second in the OUA and U SPORTS with 25 points per game. Sow has been an instrumental component in the Hawks’ success this season, who sit in top spot of the OUA West standings at 7-3 and hold the ninth-ranked spot in the country.
In a November to remember, Sow has continued to be a leading force for the Hawks, with a number of stand-out performances. In a win over Toronto in early November, Sow set a new career high with 32 points, his second straight game with 30-plus points. In the final two minutes in a come-from-behind win against York, Sow shot 11 straight points to give the Hawks the victory, a game in which he was perfect from the free throw line and captured six assists and four rebounds. To add to the drama, Sow set a Laurier modern day scoring record, beating the previous record set by Max Allin in 2013, with 44 points against Nipissing on November 24. Tying the score in the final seconds to send the game to overtime, Sow then scored seven of the team’s 17 points in extra time for a Hawks victory. In his sophomore season, Sow is averaging 25 PPG, 3.4 RPG, 3.4 APG and shooting 87.2 percent from the free throw line.
