U SPORTS supports pair of Government of Canada announcements unveiled July 6

U SPORTS, the national brand of university sports in Canada, supports a pair of announcements made by the Federal Government on Tuesday, July 6.

A proud partner of Rideau Hall for the annual Governor General’s Academic All-Canadian Commendation, U SPORTS supports the appointment of Governor General-designate Mary May Simon by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

A distinguished Inuk leader in diplomacy and advocate for Indigenous rights, The Honourable Mary May Simon has longstanding relationships with education and Canada’s universities – receiving Doctorates of Law from eight U SPORTS member institutions, and serving as the Chancellor of Trent University in Peterborough, Ont.

The Governor General’s Academic All-Canadian Commendation was founded by the Right Honourable David Johnston, former Governor General of Canada, who first honoured Canada’s Top 8 student-athletes in 2013.

In addition, U SPORTS also supports Tuesday’s announcement by The Honourable Steven Gilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage, of the selection of the Sport Dispute Resolution Centre of Canada (SDRCC) to establish and deliver a new Independent Safe Sport Mechanism.

SDRCC has a proven track record of being impartial, trusted and fair in its treatment of parties involved in disputes. We are confident that the new system will build upon that past performance and we look forward to working with SDRCC to ensure that U SPORTS remains safe, welcoming and inclusive for all student-athletes.”
