Championships Women’s Final 8

Reece Baxendale’s free throw with 39 seconds remaining proved to be the winner as the UPEI Panthers defeated the Ryerson Rams 75-70 in their quarterfinal game at the 2020 U SPORTS Final 8 Basketball Championships on Thursday at The Arena at TD Place.

Baxendale had 19 points and added nine rebounds while U SPORTS Player of the Year Jenna Mae Ellsworth added 22 points, 13 rebounds and five assists for the Panthers. Marin Scotten had 31 points, 10 rebounds and two assists in a losing cause for the Rams.

UPEI shot 32.9 per cent from the field and 35.7 per cent from three, compared to the Ryerson’s 32.1 per cent shooting and 25.0 percent from beyond the arc.

With the win, UPEI advances to play the winner of Calgary and Brock on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET / 10:00 a.m. PT in the women’s championship semifinal, while Ryerson takes on the loser of Calgary and Brock in the women’s consolation semifinal at 1:00 p.m. ET / 10:00 a.m. PT on Friday at the Ravens Nest.
