Giles, who was named the Player of the Game for Winnipeg, added five rebounds and a steal in the win.

Faith Hezekiah, Keylyn Filewich, and Anna Kernaghan all scored in double digits for the Wesmen as well, recording 15, 11, and 10 points respectively. FIlewich added 11 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

“It gave us a boost to get going,” Giles said of the team’s first quarter. “Starting off well gave us the motivation to keep going. Having a good start is great for us.”

After the Wesmen jumped out to a 23-point lead after the first quarter, the Rouge et Or clawed back the score and cut Winnipeg’s lead to just 14 points by the end of the game. Giles said it is important for Winnipeg to play a full 40 minutes moving forward in the tournament.

“We can’t just play 20 minutes or 30 minutes. And that leads on to the next game. Playing a full 40 minutes is beneficial to us, especially on the defensive end.”

“I really believe that the first quarter was huge for us,” said Tanya McKay, the Wesmen head coach. “We really set the tone and established who we were on the court and that allowed us to continue in the game.”

Sabrine Khelifi led the way for the Rouge et Or in the losing effort, finishing with 18 points and seven rebounds. Léa Dominique added 12 points and eight rebounds for Laval.

Winnipeg finished the game shooting 43.7 per cent from the floor and 30 per cent from three-point range, compared to 39.3 per cent from the floor and 34.5 per cent from three-point range for the Rouge et Or.

With the win, the Wesmen advance to the semifinal round and will play on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Rouge et Or will play in a consolation game on Friday at 8 p.m.
