Championships Women’s Final 8

KINGSTON, Ont. – Summer Masikewich scored a team-high 18 points as the Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the UPEI Panthers 80-48 to win the fifth-place game at the U SPORTS Women’s Final 8.

The Huskies led 21-11 after first quarter but exploded in the second period, outscoring the Panthers 24-6 to take a 28-point lead into halftime and they cruised to the victory from there.

“I’m really proud of our team,” said Masikewich after the game. “It showed that we have grit in the face of adversity. We were disappointed that we lost (in the quarterfinals) but we bounced back, we really came together as a team and leaned on each other. I’m really proud of us and our wins.”

Masikewich was named the Player of the Game for the Huskies.

Also scoring in double figures for Saskatchewan were Gage Grissick, who finished with 13 points and seven rebounds, and Carly Ahlstrom, who finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

Saskatchewan outshot the Panthers, finishing 50 percent from both the floor and three-point range, compared to 23.3 percent from the floor and 16.7 percent from three-point range for UPEI.

Lauren Rainford led the Panthers in scoring with 21 points in the losing effort. Reese Baxendale also finished in double digits, with 10 points in the game.
