Championships Women’s Hockey

MONTREAL, QC. (U SPORTS) - Erica Fryer shut out the X-Women, leading the No. 1-seeded Toronto Varsity Blues to a 4-0 win over the No. 7 STFX X-Women in the consolation final of the 2023 U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship at CEPSUM in Montréal on Sunday.

It was the first-seed Varsity Blues who would impose their will in this game, scoring first just three minutes in. Lauren MacDonnell scored on the powerplay, followed by a Sophie Grawbarger powerplay marker with 55 seconds remaining. Toronto took a commanding 2-0 lead into the first intermission, going 2-for-2 on the powerplay.

Special teams continued to click for the Blues in the second, as Emma Potter found the back of the net on the man advantage 50 seconds into the period. STFX could not muster any dangerous chances through two periods, and Toronto poured it on when Kaitlyn McKnight scored to make it 4-0 after two.

The struggles continued for the X-Women in the third, as they failed to score on any of their 15 shots in the game. STFX went 0-for-5 on the powerplay in the shutout loss, and the Varsity Blues were happy to play keep away in the final 20 minutes on their way to a 4-0 win.

Erica Fryer earned the shutout, stopping all 16 shots she faced in a win for Toronto. Jamie Johnson made 14 saves on 18 shots in the loss for the X-Women.

Toronto finishes their season with a win, putting them in fifth place with the consolation win. STFX’s season comes to a close with a win and two losses in the tournament. All games at the championship can be seen on CBC Sports digital platforms (English) and at usports.ca (French).
