2022 U SPORTS Cavendish Farms University Cup Quarterfinal 4: UQTR Patriotes Outlasts UBC Thunderbirds in Double OT

U SPORTS Staff

WOLFVILLE, N.S. (U SPORTS) – Felix Lauzon’s goal in the second overtime served as the game-winner in a marathon match, as the UQTR Patriotes defeated the UBC Thunderbirds in the last quarterfinal matchup at the 2022 U SPORTS Cavendish Farms University Cup at the Andrew H. McCain Arena.

UQTR opened the scoring with 1.3 seconds left in the opening frame. Félix Bolvin was able to grab the puck in front of the UBC net and lift a backhand under the crossbar to put his team up 1-0.

UBC answered back with a beautiful breakaway marker from Cyle McNabb at the midpoint of the second period to tie the game at 1-1.

UQTR thought they had a lead partway through the third period, but their goal was immediately called off for goaltender interference.

UQTR outshot the Thunderbirds 52-38 in a showdown between two stellar goalies. UQTR netminder Alexis Gravel stopped 37 shots in the victory, while UBC’s Rylan Toth made 50 saves in the losing effort. Both goalies were awarded players of the game for their showstopping efforts.

With a turnaround of fewer than 24 hours between his next game, Gravel mentioned it wasn’t going to be an issue.

“I’ve played games in Major Junior, that the next day was a 3:00 p.m. game time. The good thing now is that we won’t travel too much – it’s only an hour to our hotel,” said Gravel after the marathon game.

With the win, UQTR advances to play the Rams at 6:00 PM ET/3:00 PM PT in the semifinals while the UBC Thunderbirds are eliminated from the University Cup. The Thunderbirds end their season with an overall record of 16-9-1 in regular season, conference playoff and U SPORTS championship action.
