Sam Davenport led the Thunderbirds to a 28-27 victory over the Golden Bears last Saturday in the 86th Hardy Cup. With his Thunderbirds down 27-21 and time running down, the third-year receiver scored a jaw-dropping touchdown with no time left on the clock. With the help of Kieran Flannery-Flack’s conversion, Davenport brought home UBC’s 16th conference title. He made 10 catches for 137 yards, the most amongst all receivers. The Thunderbirds will now play STFX in Saturday’s Mitchell Bowl in Vancouver, for a spot in the 2023 Vanier Cup.
Other Nominees:
Kaylyn St-Cyr was a defensive stand-out in Saturday’s Dunsmore Cup, where the Montréal Carabins soared to a 12-6 victory over the reigning national champions Laval. The fourth-year defensive back made two interceptions, including a 59-yard pick six in the first quarter, the sole touchdown of the game. St-Cyr also made 4.5 tackles (four solo and one assisted), helping prevent Laval from reaching the end zone. The Carabins advanced to this weekend’s Uteck Bowl where they will battle Western for a place in the 58th Vanier Cup.
Other nominees:
Brian Garrity was the most valuable player in Western’s 29-14 win against Laurier in the 115th Yates Cup on Saturday afternoon in London, Ont. The third-year kicker went 6 for 6 on field goals and won the Dalt White Trophy as the game MVP. Garrity scored 19 points and his 45-yard field goal with just under three minutes left put the game beyond reach. His performance not only put him atop of the U SPORTS leaderboard for playoff field goals, but he also led the Mustangs to their 35th conference title. Western is set to head down the 401 to compete in the Uteck Bowl against Montréal Carabins on Saturday for a berth in the 2023 Vanier Cup.
