The Trinity Western Spartans scored four unanswered goals in the second half en route to 4-0 win over the host Manitoba Bisons at the 2017 U SPORTS Women’s Soccer Championship on Thursday night.
“Manitoba defended us well,” said Spartans head coach Graham Roxburgh. They make it tricky for us but I am really happy with how we responded in the second half.”
The Bisons entered the game as the underdog, and gave the Spartans everything they could handle.
“We had a really good first half by keeping the tempo high and getting a few good scoring chances,” said Bisons head coach Vanessa Martinez, commenting on the Spartans’ strong second half. ”But once they got one, they seemed to just keep going and going.”
Trinity Western would open the scoring in the 57th minute when Rachel Hutchinson sprinted down the right side of the field and put the ball over the head of Manitoba keeper Justina Jarmoszko to give her team the 1-0 lead.
Manitoba had a chance to answer back when Sara Schur made her own run down the field but could not get a shot off before Spartan defender Elizabeth Hicks broke up the play. Kathleen Chin added to the Spartan lead, beating Jarmoszko for the second time in the half.
Trinity Western would continue their dominance, as Jenaya Robertson and Hutchinson with her second of the match scoring 26 seconds apart in the 74th and 75th minutes to seal the 4-0 win. The Spartans move on to play the Montreal Carabins in the semifinals on Saturday.
