Calgary’s Rebecca Smith and Acadia’s Gordon Shortt have been named the U SPORTS swimming athletes of the week for the period ending November 27, 2022.


Rebecca Smith, Calgary

Calgary’s Rebecca Smith had a record-breaking weekend at the Canada West swimming championship in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Earning women’s swimmer of the meet, the Olympic medalist posted the fastest time the conference has ever seen in the 50-metre freestyle with a time of 25.10. Her dominance didn't end there, as she anchored a Dinos team that captured the CW record in the 400-metre freestyle relay (3:41.36). Smith also took home gold in the 50-metre butterfly, 100-metre freestyle, 200-metre freestyle and helped her team to a silver in the 800-metre freestyle relay and 400-metre medley relay.


Gordon Shortt, Acadia

  • Year of eligibility: 3rd
  • Program: Bachelor of Business Administration

A third-year business student from Simcoe, Ont., Gordon Shortt was a standout for the Axemen at last weekend's Kemp-Fry Invitation meet hosted by Dalhousie. He posted an AUS record in the 50-metre breaststroke with his U SPORTS-qualifying time of 28.46.

Shortt also earned individual wins in the 100-metre and 200-metre breaststroke and was a member of the Axemen’s 400-metre freestyle and 400-metre medley relay wins. The Axemen finished second overall in team standings.
