CALGARY – Meaghan Mealey, Savannah Purdy, Ansah Odoom and Avery Heppell all finished with double-digit kills as the Trinity Western Spartans outlasted a spirited effort from the host University of Calgary Dinos, 3-1 (20-25, 25-16, 25-10, 25-21), Friday evening in a quarter-final matchup at the U SPORTS Women’s Volleyball Championship from the Jack Simpson Gym.
The No. 8 Dinos got a boost from their frenzied home crowd to take the opening set, but the No. 1 Spartans answered back emphatically in sets two and three before outlasting a Calgary rally in the fourth.
Mealey led the Spartans attack with 13 kills, while Purdy tallied a double-double of 12 kills and 13 digs. Rookie Regan Ingram led the Dinos with 13 kills, Kenzie Vaandering hammered home another 10 and teammate Michela Alongi had a game-high 16 digs in the loss.
Trinity Western, the Canada West champion, hit an impressive .341 for the match – including an incredible .615 in the third – and limited the Dinos to hit just .114.
TWU now advances to Saturday’s second semifinal match at 8 p.m. and will take on the winner of Friday’s McGill-Toronto game. Calgary moves on to a consolation game on 3 p.m. Saturday against the loser of the Martlets-Blues contest.
