Championships Women’s Volleyball

VANCOUVER – The No. 1-seeded Trinity Western Spartans toppled the No. 8 McGill Martlets 3-1 (25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-13) in the second quarterfinal at the U SPORTS Women’s Volleyball Championship, presented by Mikasa from War Memorial Gym in Vancouver, B.C.

After a tight start to the opening set, the Canada West champion Spartans built momentum through to a 19-11 lead and maintained control in a comfortable first set win. Charlotte Chouinard-Laliberté served up an ace for an 11-8 McGill lead in the second set, but the Spartans quickly responded and led 18-13 before holding off the Martlets to secure the set. McGill kept pushing – earning an early lead through the third and despite an impressive late surge by the Spartans, forced a fourth set. TWU jumped out to a 7-2 cushion in the fourth and extended their lead to 18-8 en route to victory.

Ansah Odoom put up a match-best 20 kills with four blocks for the Spartans, Kaylee Plouffe had an efficient 15 kills on .591 hitting, Meaghan Mealey totalled 15 kills, and Dora Komlodi doled out a whopping 56 assists in the four-set win. Clara Poiré notched 16 kills and four total blocks for the RSEQ finalist Martlets, while Victoria Iannotti had 11 kills with 12 digs and a solo block in the loss.

The Spartans advance to take on the No. 5-seeded Dalhousie Tigers in semi-final action on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. (Pacific), while McGill will face the No. 4 UQAM Citadins in a consolation match at 1:00 p.m. (Pacific) on Saturday at War Memorial Gym.
