WINNIPEG (U SPORTS) – First-year McMaster Marauder Brendan Mills registered 14 kills on 22 attempts to help advance the Marauders to the consolation final on day two of the 2022 U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship at the Investors Group Athletic Centre. McMaster University took down the Queen’s University Gaels in four sets (25-22, 28-30, 20-25, 18-25) to extend their national championship campaign while the loss marks the end of the season for Queen’s.

The Gaels took the tightly contested first set, which saw the two sides tied multiple times, by a score of 25-22. The second set got even closer as the Gaels and Marauders battled to a 28-28 tie before McMaster finally took the set 30-28. The Marauders continued to gain momentum through the next two sets, winning the third and fourth sets 25-20 and 25-18 respectively to claim the victory.

The performance of second-year Sam Cooper combined with the play of Mills proved to be the perfect combination for the Marauders. Copper tallied a team-high 16 kills and added six aces to help secure the win for McMaster. Despite the loss, Erik Siksna of the Gaels put up solid numbers, recording 11 kills and two digs.

McMaster, the 2022 OUA champions, recorded a .299 hitting percentage while Queen’s posted a percentage of .212.

The victory sends the Marauders to the consolation final on Sunday March 27th at 11 a.m. CT where they will face either the host Manitoba Bisons or provincial rival from the University of Toronto, the Varsity Blues. The loss brings the Gaels’ national championship journey to an end and will see them finish either in seventh or eighth place.
