Championships Men’s Volleyball

WINNIPEG (U SPORTS) – Fifth-year Hamish Hazelden had 17 kills and added seven digs as the University of Calgary Dinos defeated the OUA champion McMaster Marauders 3-1 (25-19, 26-24, 21-25, 25-21) in their quarterfinal game on day one of the 2022 U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball Championship at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

The Dinos jumped out to a commanding 2-0 set lead to start the match. The Marauders took the third set 25-21 to pull themselves back into the contention but Calgary rebounded in the fourth to secure the win and a birth in the national semifinals.

Fourth-year Dino Tomas Sorra tallied 36 assists and seven digs to help propel his squad to victory. McMaster’s Sam Cooper led both teams with 23 kills on 47 attempts while also putting down seven aces.

Calgary, the 2022 Canada West bronze medalists, recorded a .271 hitting percentage in the match, compared to McMaster’s .202.

With the win the Calgary Dinos advance to semifinal 1 on Saturday March 26th at 6 p.m CT where they will face either the University of Alberta Golden Bears or the Queen’s University Gaels. The McMaster Marauders will move to the consolation bracket and play loser of the Alberta and Queen’s matchup at 12:30 p.m. CT on Saturday March 26th.
