Championships Men’s Volleyball

In a thrilling five set battle, the TWU Spartans took down the Guelph Gryphons. The Spartans overcame a slow start to take the victory and their place in the U SPORTS Men’s Volleyball consolation final.

(24-26, 25-23, 15-25, 25-21, 15-9)

The first set went point for point, until the Gryphons pulled ahead and took the win. The Spartans rallied to secure the second, forth, fifth, and the game win.

“We talked about going into this game and just playing with a lot of pride and a lot of joy and at the end of the day we still played to our standards and that was the goal,” TWU Head Coach Adam Schriemer said.

Despite the loss, The Gryphons put up a particular commanding third set, finishing with a 25-15 lead.

Kaden Schmitt and Henry Rempel took charge for the Spartans. Schmitt recorded 22 kills with a hitting percentage of .333 and Rempel added an addition 15 kills and two service aces.

“Kaden had over 20 kills after the fourth set, he was really clued in offensively, that was huge,” Schreimer remarked.

Setter Anslem Rein earned TWU’s player of the game with 46 assists, seven digs, and two service aces. Rein also played a key role in changing the tides in TWU’s favor after they went down in the third set.

“I think sometimes it just takes on guy to take the team forward and make them believe and I did my best job to do that tonight,” Rein said.

In the loss, Guelph put up a team effort; Johnathon Pickett accrued 20 points, Camron Chadwick bagged an additional 15, and both Alexander Odle and Jacob Bailey put up 8.5.

The Spartans advance to the consolation finals to take on the Laval Rouge et Or on Sunday at 1pm.
