Brock sweeps team titles for fourth straight year
For the first time in their history, Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., will be hosting a U SPORTS national championship when they welcome the top wrestling programs in the country. The 2018 U SPORTS Wrestling Championships are set for Feb. 23-24, 2018.
Algoma, who has never won a national title in any sport, will be attempting to dethrone the seemingly unstoppable Brock wrestling program. Both the men’s and women’s Brock teams have won the national championship for six years in a row, dating back to 2012 (although the men were co-champions in 2012 and 2013 with Concordia and Alberta, respectively).

A big factor in the Badgers’ wrestling program success has been their coach, Martin “Marty” Calder, who attended Brock University in the late 1980s and early 1990s, establishing himself as a standout Canadian university wrestler and helping the team win the first national championship in school history. He went on to represent Canada at the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games, and began coaching at Brock in 1994. His coaching success had rewarded him with 16 U SPORTS Coach of the Year titles, and has been part of the Brock wrestling dynasty that has won 24 national championships.

Brock alumni in the Olympics are not limited to just Calder. In the 2016 Rio Olympics Games alone, Calder, who was representing Canada as a coach, was joined by three Brock wrestling alumni who were competing for Canada at the Games: Michelle Fazzari, Jazmine Mian, and Jillian Gallays.
The wrestling championship will be hosted at the George Leach Centre (GLC), home of the Algoma Thunderbirds. The 49,000 square foot facility was built in 1992, and was named after Algoma’s first-ever athletics and recreation director, George Leach.
The 2018 U SPORTS Wrestling National Championship are free to attend and open to the public.
