The Brock Badgers, looking to secure their seventh consecutive sweep of the U SPORTS mats, will lead the way with 10 competitors in the gold medal matches on Saturday after a dominant Day 1 at the U SPORTS Wrestling Championships at Brock’s Bob Davis Gymnasium.
Five Badger men and five women advance to the gold-medal matches in their respective weight classes.
“All and all it was a great day,” said Brock head coach Marty Calder. “I’m always looking at the ones we didn’t get, but it wasn’t that bad. We did have some moments today where we weren’t as good as we could have been.”
Brock will have six of their wrestlers compete for bronze.
“These athletes are on the path to the highest level, so sometimes you see some inconsistencies and mistakes,” said Calder. “You know it’s coming, the wave of misfortune, and we talk about it and that’s when we have to dig our heels in and get through it.”
The Saskatchewan Huskies will deploy the second-largest group in Saturday’s action, as six of their wrestlers will square off in final matches.
Four Calgary Dinos and four Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas will test their might for gold.
Action gets underway on Saturday beginning with the fifth- and seventh-place matches at 10 a.m. ET / 7 a.m. PT at Bob Davis Gymnasium. The bronze-medal matches begin at noon ET/9 a.m. PT while gold-medal matches begin at 2 p.m. ET/11 a.m. PT.
