Ten short track speed skaters selected to represent Canada at Lake Placid 2023
At last! For the first time in 1,278 days, Canadian student-athletes will be defending their country's colours at FISU World University Games starting Wednesday, as teams begin to arrive in Lake Placid.
Some 120 athletes (62 male, 58 female), 36 support staff and 12 mission staff will represent Canada at the 31st FISU World University Winter Games. The total delegation of 169 people, coming from 52 colleges and universities, is the third largest of the 43 countries present in New York State.
“It is a privilege to represent your country, and Canadians can be proud of the student-athletes who will proudly wear the Maple Leaf over the next two weeks in Lake Placid,” said Canada’s Chef de Mission, Ben Matchett. “Their hard work, dedication, tenacity and resilience have given them the opportunity to compete at these Games, and the experiences and memories they will make will last a lifetime. Our sincere thanks to FISU and the Lake Placid organizing committee for all their efforts to make these Games happen. Go Canada Go!”
The first competition will take place on Wednesday with the women's hockey team opening its tournament against Slovakia. The opening ceremony will be held the following day, January 12, at the legendary Herb Brooks Arena at the Lake Placid Olympic Center, made famous by 1980’s “Miracle on Ice”.
