  • Name: Logan Gabay-Lockhart
  • School: Humber College
  • Program: Sport Management
  • Internship position: Marketing and Sponsorship
  • Hometown: Richmond Hill, Ont.

1. What attracted you to Humber College and your program?

Sports was the first thing I can remember being interested in and that interest stuck with me all the way to when it was time to pick a post-secondary path. It was without a doubt that continuing to learn about sports was what I was going to do. Humber College gave me the chance to explore the world of the sports industry, which many people do not realize how big it actually is, and how much they there is explore.

2. Why were you interested in interning at U SPORTS?

Even though I love professional sports, amateur sports including junior hockey and other school sports captivate my interest almost as much. Getting a chance to be let in on the stories of our university athletes was amazing and having the chance to tell these stories is what interested me the most.

3. What are your key learnings from your experience at U SPORTS?

Learning how to work in a fast-paced environment and managing multiple projects, as well as paying attention to detail. It’s the little things in a project that can break or make the success of it.

4. Any memorable moments over the course of your internship?

Watching the fall national championships with the staff at the main office was special. All the hard work prior to the championships was evident in watching the games and seeing how proud the staff was a feel good moment.

5. What is one piece of advice you can give to someone interested in joining U SPORTS?

Understand that every piece of work you do at U SPORTS will somehow give you the skills to be great one day in the industry. You may not realize it at first, but the projects given to you will pay off somehow in the future. The U SPORTS team is welcoming and will support you every day all semester.

6. Why did you choose to pursue a career in sports and what is your dream job?

When you work on something you genuinely love and want to make a difference at, there isn’t a more rewarding feeling in the world. For me, that is sports and I am up for the challenge to continue to pursue a career and experience the reward of being successful. There is no dream job, only getting better every day and seeing where that takes you is more exciting than just naming a “dream job.”

7. If you could sit down with one person in the sports industry (athlete, coach, manager or professional), who would it be? Why? What would you talk about?

I’ve always been more interested in sport people from the management side as opposed to the player side, so I would like to sit down with Brian Burke. I think he can provide me with many interesting stories from the hockey world and his “tell it how it is” persona would make for a good interview. I’d love to ask him about what life is like as an NHL general manager.

8. After joining U SPORTS and gaining a better understanding of what we do, how would you describe the organization and the culture at the national office?

U SPORTS is a team. It is a tight group and it is clear everyone wants their fellow staff members to be individually successful. I think many organizations can learn a lesson from U SPORTS on developing strong working relationships and leadership.

9. What do you enjoy doing when you’re away from your internship and school?

Away from school I follow all sports passionately, as well as indulging in the arts by playing music with my friends in Richmond Hill.

10. What is your most memorable sports moment?

Getting to experience the Blue Jays make their deep playoff runs to the ALCS in 2015 and 2016 was incredible for me. As a life-long Toronto sports fan, that being my favorite sports moment shows my misery as fan of sports in the city for my entire life. However, it seems good times are ahead for Toronto sports in the very near future.

The objective of the U SPORTS Internship program is to provide students currently enrolled in collegiate / university programs with concrete experience of what it is like to work in the Canadian sport industry.
