U SPORTS Athletes of the Week: StFX’s Tane Caubo, UQAM’s Eloissaint honoured
U SPORTS announced Thursday that the UNB Reds will host the 2021 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships.
The event will be held March 11-13, 2021 at Saint John’s newly constructed Irving Oil Field House – the largest space of its kind in the province of New Brunswick and one of the largest in Atlantic Canada. It will be one of the first major national championship meets hosted in the new facility, and will mark the first time an Atlantic University Sport (AUS) school has hosted the national university track and field championships.
“The Irving Oil Field House in Saint John is the perfect facility to host the 2021 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships,” said Lisette Johnson-Stapley, Chief Sport Officer at U SPORTS. “We are excited to bring one of our marquee high-performance events to this new state-of-the-art venue together with UNB – who have proven their ability to stage U SPORTS events over the last several years.”
The Reds have played host to U SPORTS championships for the last four consecutive seasons – including the 2016 Women’s Basketball Final 8, 2017 and 2018 University Cup Men’s Hockey Championship and the 2019 U SPORTS / Curling Canada Curling Championships.
“This is a milestone for Reds track and field, and for the University of New Brunswick,” said John Richard, UNB’s Director of Athletics. “Our track and field program has been building over the last couple of years and this will help put them on the map, not just regionally, but nationally.”

The Reds will test the new facility in advance of the 2021 U SPORTS track and field meet in February, when they host the 2020 Subway AUS Track and Field Championships – the first time the event will be held outside of the Université de Moncton in nearly four decades.
The 2020 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships will be hosted by the Alberta Golden Bears and Pandas from Mar. 5-7 at the Van Vliet Complex in Edmonton.
This season’s lineup of individual sport championships also includes Queen’s hosting cross country, followed by swimming at Victoria, wrestling at Brock and curling in Portage La Prairie, Man. A host school for the 2020 U SPORTS / Curling Canada Curling Championships will be announced at a later date.
Following Thursday’s announcement, 13 national championship hosts across all four conferences and seven provinces have been announced for the 2020-21 season, reaffirming U SPORTS as the national brand of university sports in Canada.
