Athletes of the Week: Lethbridge’s Overwater, Cape Breton’s Keough honoured

Zac Overwater from the Lethbridge Pronghorns and Alison Keough of the Cape Breton Capers are the U SPORTS Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Jan. 14, 2018.

A fifth-year centre from Marion Bridge, N.S., Keough led the Capers in a close overtime loss and a win this past weekend versus the UNB Varsity Reds. The reigning AUS MVP, she also surpassed the 1,500 career points mark. Friday night, she earned Subway Player of the Game nods posting a game-high 30 points and 13 rebounds, to go along with six assists and a steal, as the Capers fell 90-83 to the Varsity Reds in overtime. Keough managed another double-double Saturday, with a game-high 21 points and 17 rebounds, as well as four assists, as Cape Breton topped UNB 87-63.

With 1,533 career points to date, she now sits second on the Capers’ all-time scoring list and eighth in AUS all-time scoring. Following this weekend’s performance, she also moves into second place in AUS all-time career rebounding, with 902—just 24 short of the all-time record held by former Saint Mary’s standout Julie Galipeau.

Overwater, a fourth-year forward combined for 64 points, 17 rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks to help the Pronghorns to a weekend split with the U SPORTS No. 4-ranked UBC Thunderbirds.  Friday night, the Didsbury, Alta. native picked up 15 points, five rebounds, an assist, steal and block in Lethbridge’s 84-71 loss to the Thunderbirds. The next night, Overwater truly had a special performance, setting a new school record for points in a game and leading the Pronghorns to a 106-101 overtime win over the fourth ranked T-Birds. His 49 points broke the program’s mark of 43 points that was shared by Perry Mirkovich, Al Chapple and Danny Balderson. His point total was tied for the sixth highest in Canada West single-game history, and the first 40-plus point performance in the conference since Showron Glover posted 50 for Saskatchewan in January of 2009.

Overwater completed the double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds to go along with four assists, three steals, and a block in the win. On the season, Overwater sits second on the Pronghorns in scoring, averaging 17.6 points per game to go along with 7.3 rebounds per game.
