Women’s Basketball News

For the third time in 10 years, the University of Regina will play host to the 2018 U SPORTS Women's Basketball Championship at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. Ranked one of the top three programs since the beginning of the season, this will be the fourth time Regina has hosted the tournament, having previously done so in 1979, 2009 and 2013.

Last season, the Cougars had one of their best years in recent history finishing with a Canada West silver medal and qualifying for the Final 8, before losing in the quarter-finals to eventual national champion McGill. Regina last won the Bronze Baby Trophy in 2001.

“The people of Regina are so supportive, everyone comes to watch us so we want to win for the city,” said second-year Cougars guard Kyia Giles. “The whole community will be there and we want to make sure do it for them.”

Last season, McGill – whose students’ council donated the Bronze Baby in 1922 – won its first national title in the first-ever title match between two RSEQ programs. Historically, the Victoria Vikes lead the way with nine U SPORTS championships, followed by Laurentian (7), UBC (6) and Windsor, who won five consecutive titles from 2011 to 2015.
