Women’s Basketball
The Brock Badgers reminded the entire nation why they are the kings and queens of the wrestling mats.
The Badgers swept the final wrestling rankings of the year – and their first since the opening poll of the campaign – following the most dominant performance in the history of the OUA Championships. Brock won 16 of 19 gold medals, en route to capturing both conference banners for the third straight season. The Badgers will now prepare for the U SPORTS Championships hosted by Algoma in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. next weekend.
On the track, the Toronto Varsity Blues women vault to No.1 for the first time since the final rankings of last season (Mar. 7, 2017) after a number of top finishes at a pair of meets, highlighted by second-year Lucia Stafford defending her 800m gold medal at the Spire D1 Invitational. The Varity Blues will host the Hal Brown Last Chance Meet on Friday, their final action before the OUA Championships.
In men’s hockey, the UNB Varsity Reds (24-2-4) are the team to beat heading into the playoffs, following 5-2 and 4-1 victories over No.3 StFX (22-4-4) and Dalhousie at home to close the regular season. With a bye through the quarterfinals, the first-place Varsity Reds will prepare to host a best-of-five AUS semifinal beginning next week.
In other U SPORTS rankings, Carleton (men’s and women’s basketball), Manitoba (women’s Hockey), Trinity Western (men’s volleyball), UBC Okanagan (women’s volleyball), UBC (men’s and women’s swimming) and Guelph (men’s track and field), all remain national leaders for another week.
Note: This marks the final rankings of the season for swimming and wrestling ahead of upcoming U SPORTS Championships, Feb. 22-24.
