Women’s Basketball News

U SPORTS proudly announced Sunday its women’s basketball programs had raised $100,961.31 for the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) in 2017-18, thanks to the 11th edition of its annual Shoot For The Cure initiative.

The impressive amount was unveiled following the first quarter of the championship final – between the Carleton Ravens and Saskatchewan Huskies – of the U SPORTS Women’s Basketball Final 8 at the University of Regina’s Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport. Scott Reeves, head coach of the Thompson Rivers Wolfpack, presented a cheque to Aurora Marinari, fundraising specialist at the Canadian Cancer Society.

An additional $17,996.85 was amassed by schools that elected to donate their fundraised money to local or provincial organizations, bringing this season’s Shoot For The Cure overall total to $118,958.16 and the 11-year total to $1,252,516.77 since the initiative was launched in 2007-08 to raise awareness and money to fight the deadly disease.

For the seventh straight season, all 47 U SPORTS women’s hoops programs participated by holding one or numerous fundraising games or activities over the course of the campaign.

“It was another great year for the Shoot For The Cure initiative. Every U SPORTS women’s basketball team held an event on their campus and as a group, we continue to raise awareness and funds to battle this terrible disease,” said Jeff Speedy, Shoot For The Cure project manager and head coach of the UNB Varsity Reds. “Our student-athletes are true role models and continue to set a great example for young basketball players across the country. They are “all in” on something that is much bigger than basketball or wins and losses.”

The money will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society, after the organization merged with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF) – the previous recipient of Shoot For The Cure funds.
