SYDNEY, N.S. (U SPORTS) – Sophia Widmeyer scored a game-high 16 points to lead the No. 4-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies to a 70-68 win over the No. 5 Calgary Dinos in the third quarterfinal of the 2023 Protocase Women’s Final 8, presented by Bell, at the Sullivan Field House in Sydney, Thursday. Widmeyer earned player of the game honours for the Huskies, scoring seven of her 16 points in the fourth quarter to push Saint Mary’s into the Final 8 semi-finals for the first time since 2016.

Saint Mary’s had a slight lead after every quarter. The first quarter ended at 12-11 for the Huskies, they maintained their one-point lead at the half with a 29-28 score and extended their edge narrowly to two points with a 45-43 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Lucina Beaumont had an impressive night for Saint Mary’s on both sides of the court with 13 points and seven rebounds. Clara Gascoine, the AUS defensive player of the year, tallied 11 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists.

The Dinos stayed in the game until the last second with a three-point shot converted from Pollyanna Storie, but could not complete the comeback. The Edinburgh, Scotland, product led the Dinos in points with 12 and added four rebounds. Mya Proctor also had a strong night with 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Amélie Collin won player-of- the-game honours for Calgary as she tallied 11 points and three rebounds.

With the win, Saint Mary’s advances to Saturday’s championship semifinal, where they will play the winner of the Carleton-Cape Breton game at 6 p.m. (all times Atlantic). Calgary will play the loser of that contest in a consolation game on Friday at 8 p.m.
