Men’s Basketball
The Saskatchewan Huskies (women) and reigning champion Carleton Ravens (men) start the season as the top-ranked basketball programs in the nation.
It’s the first No.1 ranking for Saskatchewan since Feb. 9, 2016 – just over a month prior to the team’s first national championship in school history. The Huskies, who finished fourth at last year’s tournament, went a perfect 7-0 in the preseason and open the new Canada West campaign this weekend with a visit to the Brandon Bobcats.
On the men’s side, the Ravens are coming off their 14th national title last March and currently sport an 8-1 preseason record ahead of Tuesday night’s visit to the NCAA’s Syracuse Orange. The Ravens begin the OUA regular season this weekend hosting Waterloo and Laurier
On the volleyball court, the defending champion Trinity Western Spartans men (3-1) are once again the team to beat, taking the No. 1 spot for the first time since Nov. 27 of last season. The Spartans haven’t dropped a set in three of their four games this year, most recently picking up back-to-back sweeps over Winnipeg. They’ll host the MacEwan Griffins this weekend.
Finally on the pitch, the York Lions (11-0-3 / 1-0 playoffs) have reclaimed the No.1 ranking for the first time since Nov. 1, 2016, after beating McMaster 4-1 in the OUA quarterfinals. The Lions will host the OUA Final 4 this weekend, featuring No.3 Carleton, No. 7 Toronto and No. 8 Guelph.
In other U SPORTS rankings, Ottawa (women’s soccer), Calgary (men’s cross country), Queen’s (women’s cross country), Western (football), UNB (men’s hockey), Concordia (women’s hockey) and Trinity Western (women’s volleyball) remain at No.1 for another week.
Top 10 rankings have concluded for soccer and cross country and will begin next week in swimming and wrestling.
