The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Friday the individual award nominees for its annual CEBL Awards being held August 10 at the Casino Du Lac-Leamy in Gatineau, QC. The CEBL Awards is the first official event of the 2022 Championship Weekend, which is being held in Ottawa, Ont. between August 10-14.

Forward David Muenkat of the Scarborough Shooting Stars (StFX X-Men) and Forward Thomas Kennedy of the Fraser Valley Bandits (Windsor Lancers) were nominated for the U SPORTS Player of the Year Award.

Muenkat, who was the first-overall draft selection in the 2022 CEBL-U SPORTS draft, was also the first pick in Scarborough Shooting Stars franchise history.

Over 13 games, Muenkat became a focal part of the Shooting Stars' rotation, averaging over 11 minutes per game. The high-flying Toronto native averaged 5.63 points per game to go along with three rebounds per game.

Kennedy, who was drafted seventh-overall by Fraser Valley in the 2022 CEBL-U SPORTS Draft, made an immediate impact in his second pro year.

In 12 regular season games for the Bandits, Kennedy was second in scoring for Fraser Valley, averaging 14.5 points per game, while leading the team in rebounds per game with 8.3. The Windsor Lancers product also led Fraser Valley with a 63.6 field goal percentage through the season. This rate was good for second in the CEBL.

On the defensive side, the six-foot-nine forward ranked fourth in steals per game with 0.9, while averaging 0.7 blocks per game.

In July, Kennedy also represented Canada at GLOBL JAM – an international basketball showcase that spotlighted basketball’s rising stars competing in an Under-23 tournament, held at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, ON.
