Miracles are trending in Quebec City, the Rouge et Or reach the national final!

For a second straight night, the Laval Rouge et Or defied the odds with a 85-74 victory over the Dalhousie Tigers on Saturday to reach the national final for the first time in history.

Sunday at 6 p.m. ET, the Rouge et Or will face the Queen’s Gaels in the title match of the 2024 GreenShield U SPORTS Final 8 Men’s Basketball Championship, presented by Michelob Ultra at the Laval University PEPS. Actually both teams will be playing a national final for the first time in their school’s history.

After taking care of the first-seeded team on Friday night in the quarterfinals, the Rouge et Or took a few minutes to get going in Saturday’s semifinals, quickly trailing 7-2. Energized by the 3,000 fans packing their home gym, Laval was quickly back on track, eventually taking a 12-10 lead a few moments later.

The lead then changed hands a few times before the local favourites ran away with the result in the very last minute of play. Leading by one with 65 seconds to go, the Rouge et Or concluded the game on a 10-0 run to capture this historical victory.

Haris Elezovic and Ismael were the Rouge et Or pillars with each completing a double double. Elezovic closed the game with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Diouf had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Diouf also added three blocks and two steals in 37 minutes of play.

Malcom Christie led the whole game with 25 points in a losing cause. The Tigers will now regroup to face the Ottawa Gee-Gees for the bronze medal, Sunday at 2 p.m.
