The UQAM Citadins earned their spot in the fifth-place match by defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen 88-80 Saturday, in the opening match of Day 2 at the 2024 GreenShield U SPORTS Final 8 Men’s Basketball Championship, presented by Michelob Ultra at the Laval University PEPS in Quebec City.

Offence and intensity were on hand in the opening quarter that both teams ended on a tied score. The RSEQ champions raised their game in the following quarter with a few offensive runs to take a six-point lead into halftime. Despite Winnipeg’s efforts, the Citadins never looked back, riding on to victory.

All-Canadian Second Team member Kevin Civil was on a mission on Saturday, scoring 23 points. Cheick Dosso added 13 rebounds to his 14 points. Shawn Maranan and Mikhail Mikhailov shone in the loss, scoring 27 and 20 points respectively.

The UQAM Citadins will be back in action at 12 (noon) on Sunday at face the winner of the second consolation semifinal between Victoria and Brock to play for fifth place in the nation. Following a heartbreaking one-point loss to Queen’s on Friday in the tournament’s quarterfinals, and Saturday’s defeat against UQAM, the Winnipeg Wesmen’s season is now over.
