The Laval Rouge et Or achieved what could be considered as the biggest upset this season in Canadian university basketball Friday night at home by upending the first-seeded Victoria Vikes by a score of 75-69 in the third quarterfinal of the 2024 GreenShield U SPORTS Final 8 Men’s Basketball Championships presented by Michelob Ultra in Quebec City.

Carried by loud and engaged crowd of close to 3,000 home fans, the Rouge et Or clinched its place in the national semifinals for the first time since 2003. Despite being heavy underdogs for this game, the Rouge et Or stood up from the opening minutes, even taking an eight-point lead in the opening quarter.

This is where the most valuable player in Canada, Diego Maffia got going, scoring a big chunk of his 26 points production on the night.

With each good move from the Vikes’ point guard, the Rouge et Or responded spectacularly. Steeve Joseph led the charge for the home team with 17 points, three more than teammate Sidney Tremblay-Lacombe. Ismael Diouf led both teams off the board with 12 rebounds.

Ahead by over 10 points halfway in the fourth quarter, the Vikes closed the gap at three points in the final seconds of the game. The hosts’ defensive game rose up a notch, pushed by the ecstatic crowd to close this historical victory.

The Rouge et Or will now face the AUS champions and fourth-seeded Dalhousie Tigers, Saturday night in the semifinals.
