Men’s Basketball News

For the first time in their program’s history, the Queen’s Gaels will play in a men’s basketball Canadian national university final after defeating the Ottawa Gee-Gees 84-77 Saturday night in the first semifinal at the 2024 GreenShield U SPORTS Final 8 Men’s Basketball Championship, presented by Michelob Ultra at the Laval University PEPS in Quebec City.

Starting with a 6 p.m. ET tip-off on Sunday, the Gaels will attempt to keep the national banner in Ontario for the 19th time in the last 21 seasons.

Unlike their two previous encounters this season where the Gaels edged the Gee-Gees by a single point twice, the semifinal clash was largely dominated by the OUA champions. The turning point in that game happened in the second quarter when the Gaels scored 26 of the last 31 points in the opening half to lead by 14 points at the break.

The Gee-Gees tried to close the gap in the remaining 20 minutes of play, come as close as six points from their rivals in the fourth quarter, but the slope was simply too steep to climb.

After missing Friday’s quarterfinal, the reigning U SPORTS Defensive Player of the Year Luka Syllas had an important impact in this game with 20 points. His brother was even more dominant with 25 points and 18 rebounds, including 17 on the defensive end.

The Gaels will now play for the national title against the winner of the second semifinal opposing the Laval Rouge et Or and the Dalhousie Tigers. The Gee-Gees can still return home with a bronze medal, with that game set for Sunday afternoon against the losers of that second semifinal.
