Men’s Basketball News

The second match of the day was a very tight affair at the Laval University PEPS in Quebec City on Friday afternoon. The Queen’s Gaels picked up their ticket for the semifinal of the 2024 Greenshield U SPORTS Final 8 Men’s Basketball Championship, presented by Michelob Ultra, after edging the Winnipeg Wesmen 77-76.

Trailing by six points with less than two minutes to go, the Canada West Conference Championships finalists made it for a very exciting conclusion by scoring five unanswered points and reduce the gap to one little point.  The Wesmen had the opportunity to cause quite a surprise by taking a buzzer beater, but in vain.

Winnipeg roared out of the gates by rapidly taking a 10-point lead early in the second quarter. The SUO champions then turned the table on their opponents with a 15-0 run before retreating to the locker room up by eight.

Five Gaels player reached double digits in the win, including Cameron Bett’s 16 points in the first half.  His last three points came on a last second shot from the middle of the court.

With the win, the Gaels move on to face the Ottawa Gee-Gees a very familiar opponent in the semifinals. In the opening quarterfinal, Ottawa upset the UQAM Citadins earlier on Thursday.
