CROSS-COUNTRY: Agostinelli and Ushko honoured for community service efforts
The 2023 U SPORTS men’s and women’s cross country national championships will be held on Sunday November 12 at the Thames Valley Golf Course in London, Ont. The women’s race will take place at noon (all times Eastern), while the men’s race will happen at 1 p.m.
For the eighth time in U SPORTS history, the competition will be hosted by Western University. The last time Western hosted was in 2012 and 2013, where the Guelph Gryphons’ men’s and women’s teams finished first in both years.
The Laval Rouge et Or and the McMaster Marauders are the defending champions on the women’s and men’s side, respectively, topping the team rankings in the 2022 U SPORTS cross country championships in Timberlea, N.S. held at the Links at Brunello Golf Club. Max Turek of McMaster University topped the men’s individual race, while the University of British Colombia’s Glynis Sim placed first for the women’s individual race.
The four conference championships preceding the national championships all took place on Saturday, October 28.
The Canada West championships were held in Kelowna, B.C.. The University of British Colombia (UBC) Thunderbirds was the winning team on the women’s side, with their first five finishers all placing no lower than seventh. Individually, Katie Newlove of UBC finished first, followed by Chloe Turner from the University of Calgary, and Kaitlyn Harrison from the University of Saskatchewan. In the men’s race, the Thunderbirds were even more dominant, leading all teams and sweeping the top four individual spots. Andrew Davies, John Perrier, and Jaiveer Tiwana took home the top three for UBC.
The Guelph Gryphons were the dominant team in the OUA championship in Waterloo, Ont. Guelph took home the men’s team win, having had all five starters within the top 15. Gryphons runners Nicholas Bannon and Max Davies finished first and second individually, while Ben Shore from the University of Toronto Varsity Blues placed third. Western University ranked first on the women’s side with their team’s top five runners finishing consecutively from third to seventh. Julia Agostinelli from Guelph finished first, Rosalyn Barrett from McMaster placed second, and Western’s Chloe Coutts finished third in the women’s individual race.
Halifax was this year’s host city for the AUS championships. The STFX X-Women finished as the top team in the conference, with all five team members in the top seven. UNB runner Emily Doucet was the top individual, followed by Allie Sandluck and Eileen Benoit of St. Francis Xavier University. On the men’s side, the UNB Reds were the top team, securing the second, third, eighth, ninth and thirteenth spots. Jacob Benoit of Dalhousie was the first individual men’s runner, while Jared Howse and William Boyle of UNB wrapped up the top three.
The RSEQ championships took place in Rawdon, Que. this year. Laval took the top three spots in the men’s individual race, with Philippe Morneau-Cartier, Jonathan Tedeschi and Thomas Fafard finishing first, second and third. Laval also secured the women’s top two spots in Catherine Beauchemin and Jade Bérubé, while Élisa Tripotin of Université du Quebec à Montréal came third.
