Guelph looking to reclaim banner sweep on the Plains of Abraham

Cross country runners Claire Sumner from Queen’s University and Yves Sikubwabo from Laval University are the ArcelorMittal Dofasco U Sports female and male athletes of the week for the period ending November 13, 2016.
Sumner, a fourth-year life sciences students from Calgary, won the women’s title at the CIS Championship on Saturday. The Gaels veteran finished the race in 21:09.3, nearly six seconds ahead of her opponent, earning MVP and All-Canadian honours.
Volleyball player Maiya Westwood of Memorial, soccer player Joëlle Gosselinof Laval and cross country runner Emma Cook-Clarke of Calgary were also nominated for the women’s award.
Sikubwabo, a first-year engineering physics major from Kicukiro, Rwanda, captured the men’s individual title at the national championship, helping host Laval win its first team banner in school history after four consecutive podium finishes dating back to 2012 (one silver, three bronze). The Rouge et Or rookie crossed the finish line in 30:51, winning by five seconds for his second U Sports male athlete of week award recognition.
Volleyball player Eivind Andersen of UNB, soccer player Alex Zis of Guelph and cross country runner Declan White of Trinity Western were the other male nominees.
