Ottawa rivals, Ravens and Gee-Gees face off in season opener

The Carleton Ravens men’s basketball team hasn't lost a regular season game since Feb.5, 2016. Two years and over 40 wins later, the Ravens look to continue that streak Friday tonight when they take on their crosstown rivals - the Ottawa Gee-Gees – in the OUA season opener. Although both teams are based in the nation’s capital, Friday’s contest will be a road game for the Ravens, taking place at uOttawa's Montpetit Hall. Following an impressive preseason tear that included dominant wins over notable NCAA programs, Carleton will have to make sure they come out with focus in a tough environment. On the Gee-Gees side of the ball, they'll be looking to replace former First and Second Team OUA All-Star big man Jean Emmanuel Pierre-Charles who has graduated. Thompson Rivers, Fraser Valley open Canada West season with Shoot for the Cure game

Basketball season is officially back and, in the Canada West conference, the Thompson Rivers WolfPack travel to Abbotsford, B.C., to take on the UFV Cascades in a two-game series this weekend. Their Saturday game will be an important one for Fraser Valley, who are hosting their U SPORTS Shoot for the Cure fundraising night – an initiative helps raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society to help fight breast cancer. Both teams had an 8-12 record last year, with TRU going 4-6 on the road, and UFV going 5-4 at home, so fans can expect an evenly-matched contest. Tip-off goes tonight at:

Women’s Rugby

AUS and RSEQ finals on tap ahead of national championship draw

Just a pair of gold medal games are left to be played Friday night, before attention shifts to Acadia University for the U SPORTS Women’s Rugby Championship. In the AUS, the No. 7 Axewomen will face off against the No. 4 StFX X-Women for the eighth year in a row. Acadia is coming off a 55-0 blowout win at home in the semifinals against UPEI. StFX on the other hand, had a bye last week courtesy of their 22-20 win against Acadia in the regular season finale. Now, the two teams face each other for the AUS title.

In the RSEQ, the defending national champs and No. 1 Ottawa Gee-Gees will host the No. 3 Laval Rouge et Or for Quebec conference gold. The Gee-Gees and RSEQ Rugby Rookie of the Year Claire Gallagher are coming off a convincing 73-0 shutout against Sherbrooke in the semifinals and will look to capture their fifth consecutive conference banner. The Rouge et Or lost the first game between the two teams to open the season, as well as the national final to Ottawa last November.

Field Hockey

OUA champions, U SPORTS championship host to be determined this weekend in Waterloo

With the Victoria Vikes claiming the Canada West regular season title, all that’s left before the best-of-three U SPORTS Women’s Field Hockey Championship is the identity of the OUA champion. All seven OUA teams, along with McMaster’s club squad head to the University of the Waterloo for the conference championship this weekend. The defending champion York Lions will look to continue their incredible season and capture their second straight conference title, while holding off perennial contenders in the Toronto Varsity Blues and Guelph Gryphons. The winner will host the Vikes in the U SPORTS Championship next weekend.

The action begins at 9:00 a.m. ET / 6:00 a.m. PT Friday and will continue until Sunday’s gold medal game at 3:00 p.m. ET / 12:00 p.m.

Men’s Soccer

Canada West quarterfinals begin Saturday

As the soccer season comes to a close, Canada West will host its conference quarterfinals on Saturday. Thompson Rivers is set to take on No.6 Alberta, followed by, UFV and Saskatchewan. Later on, Mount Royal will play No. 4 UBC and finally, Calgary will take the pitch against No. 10 Trinity Western. UBC, who will host the U SPORTS Championship in two weeks, are coming off their first loss of the season, a 1-0 loss to TRU, while Trinity Western is also coming off a 2-1 loss to TRU. Final weekend of regular season play in AUS

The No. 4 Cape Bretton Capers will head to Acadia to face the No. 6 Axewomen as the AUS season comes to a close. Both teams are coming off of weekend sweeps, and have earned first round byes going into the AUS playoffs. The Axewomen remain undefeated as they handed Dalhousie and UPEI 2-0 losses the last weekend. The Capers handed StFX a 3-0 loss last weekend before beating Mount Alison 8-2. With both teams already having clinched a spot in the playoffs, this will be a match to test their rosters, while keeping their players healthy. Catch the game tonight at:

Cross Country

Gryphons, Gaels top contenders ahead of OUA Championship

The No. 1-nationally ranked Queens Gaels women and Guelph Gryphons men are the teams to beat this weekend at the OUA championship. The Tricolour will be led by star rookie Brogan MacDougall and her sister Branna, the defending U SPORTS individual bronze medalist. Both teams will be looking to defend their OUA titles from last season. 2017 U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian Mark Patton is undefeated against Canadian competition this season, while 2017 individual silver medalist Connor Black is rounding into form at the right time. The women’s 8k race goes at 11:00 a.m. ET / 8:00 a.m. PT while the men's 10k race begins at 12:00 p.m. ET / 9:00 a.m. PT on OUA.TV at Thames Valley Golf Course in London.

Across the country, the Montreal Carabins will host the RSEQ championship, while the Dalhousie Tigers will host the AUS Championship. Canada West runners will compete in their final tuneups at the B.C. Cross Country Championships in Abbotsford and the Stewart Cup in Calgary.
