Weekend Watch: Basketball championships, Winter Universiade highlight eventful weekend

The men’s and women’s basketball conference championships will be wrapping up this weekend with CW, OUA, and RSEQ each crowing their champions.

On the men’s side in Quebec, UQAM travels to Concordia, while the OUA final will be electric, with the No. 3 Ryerson Rams visiting the top-ranked team in the nation in the Carleton Ravens for the Wilson Cup.

Out west, the undefeated and defending national champion No. 2 Calgary Dinos will be looking to repeat as conference champions against No. 4 UBC, who are eager for the upset. The Thunderbirds are coming off a big three-game series win against No. 6 Alberta, and will look for Jadon Cohee, who is averaging 13.0 points in the post-season, to elevate the team.

On the women’s side, No. 4 Saskatchewan faces provincial rival and No.5 Regina for the CW title in a rematch of last season’s epic national semifinal game, while in the RSEQ it’s Concordia visiting the No.2-ranked Laval Rouge et Or for the conference championship. In the OUA, No. 3 McMaster will battle No. 1-ranked Ottawa for the Critelli Cup, with the Gee-Gees having lost only twice all season.

Out east, the AUS Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships are underway in Halifax, with the semifinals scheduled for Saturday and the finals on Sunday at the Scotiabank Centre.

Both CW and OUA finalists have qualified for the national Final 8 tournaments, along with hosts Dalhousie (men) and Ryerson (women). The last three spots in each championship will be filled by the AUS and RSEQ champions, joined by the at-large berth.

Hockey

Puck set to drop on hockey conference championships

The men’s hockey conference playoffs continue this week, with teams looking to secure the final spots at the 2019 U SPORTS Cavendish Farms University Cup.

In the west, it’s a familiar matchup as No. 1-ranked Alberta goes up against No. 3 Saskatchewan for the CW best-of-three championship series, with both teams have qualified for the national tournament. In Ontario, the best-of-three division final matchups feature four new teams compared to last season, including No. 7 Guelph against unranked Western in the west and No. 8 Queen’s vs. No. 4 Carleton in the east. The three teams that claim OUA medals will be off to Lethbridge, Alta., for the University Cup

Finally, the AUS semifinal best-of five series is set to conclude on Friday when StFX and No.5 Saint Mary’s battle it out in the decisive contest. Both teams are looking to move on to the AUS best-of-three championship series against No. 2 UNB and the University Cup in this do-or-die matchup. StFX is coming off a 6-3-win in Game 4 on Wednesday night, where Adam Stevens had two goals and an assist to lead the X-Men to victory.

On the women’s side, the CW, RSEQ, and AUS best-of-three championship series take centre stage this week with No.3 Manitoba vs. No.1 Alberta, No. 2 Montreal vs. No. 5 McGill, and No. 7 StFX vs. No. 4 St. Thomas. Meanwhile, the OUA best-of-three semifinals have begun with Toronto battling No. 8 Western and Ryerson vs. No. 6 Guelph. Both CW and RSEQ finalists will be heading to UPEI in Charlottetown for the national championship. They’ll be joined by the host Panthers, alongside the OUA finalists and AUS champion.

Volleyball

Volleyball rallies with busy postseason schedule

It will be a busy weekend on the court as the men’s and women’s volleyball playoffs happening across the country. The CW best-of-three semifinals run through the weekend, while OUA single-game quarterfinals are scheduled for Saturday.  

In the AUS, the Women’s Volleyball Final 4 tournament at Dalhousie starts on Friday night with a crosstown rivalry between Saint Mary’s and the host Tigers, followed by UNB facing Acadia in the semifinals. The championship final is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET / 12 p.m. PT on Saturday.

Canada sets high hopes as 2019 FISU Winter Universiade kicks off

The 2019 FISU Winter Universiade is set to officially begin on Saturday in Krasnoyarsk, Russia. Alberta curling alumna Danielle Schmiemann will carry the Canadian flag into the Opening Ceremony, which begins at 8:19 a.m. ET / 5:19 a.m. PT.

The action in Siberia gets going before that though, with the men’s hockey team facing Great Britain on Friday night at 11:45 p.m. ET / 8:45 p.m. PT. Canada will also be competing in men’s and women’s curling, alpine and cross country skiing, biathlon and snowboard, which all start this weekend.

On Friday morning, Canada beat China 10-0 in the women’s hockey opener, which was followed by Team Canada’s opening reception.
