Women’s Field Hockey News

Mark Patton of the Guelph Gryphons and Jaslan Stirling from the York Lions are the U SPORTS Male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sept. 23, 2018.

The Gryphons men's cross country team is loaded with talent and Patton is among the best for the defending U SPORTS team champions. The fourth-year runner made his cross country season debut at the Western International Invitational this weekend and had a huge performance, finishing first among a massive field of 175 runners at the Thames Valley Golf Course. Patton was part of a big pack up front and was a few spots away from the leader with 300 metres left before turning it on to outkick all of his fellow competitors and finish in a course-record time of 24:15. It was an incredible opening race and a result that helped push the Gryphon men into first place in the team event and keep them in first place in national standings.

Stirling, a field hockey player, paced the Lions offense this weekend, netting six goals over their three-game span – all of which were wins.  The team as a whole was able to beat the Queen’s Gaels 4-0 on Saturday and topped the Waterloo Warriors 4-2 and the Western Mustangs 6-1 on Sunday. Stirling scored the eventual game-winning goal on Saturday against the Gaels and scored three of the Lions four goals against the Warriors. She capped off her stellar weekend with another two goals against the Mustangs. Stirling now leads the nation with 10 goals on the season, picking up right where she left off from her award-winning debut a year ago, and the Lions sit in second place in the nation with a 4-0-1 record.
