No. 8 MacEwan Griffins @ No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds

The defending U SPORTS champion MacEwan Griffins are set to take on the top-ranked UBC Thunderbirds in what is expected to be an electric matchup between the two sides.

The U SPORTS Women's Soccer top ranked T-Birds are soaring out of the gates with a 3-0 record while outscoring opponents 14-0 thus far. UBC's defensive game has been stout in not yet surrendering a goal against and the offensive production has been explosive.

UBC’s Kaitlin Tolnai claimed the U SPORTS Player of the Week by recording a second-half hat trick in a 4-0 victory over the Victoria Vikes.

The Griffins, coming off a 5-2 defeat off the Alberta Pandas will have had a full 12 days to fine tune their game since they last played and will lean on second-year forward Grace Mwasala, who scored in the last match.

The top-ranked Cape Breton Capers will kick off their quest for a sixth-consecutive AUS crown this weekend, starting the AUS campaign against the UPEI Panthers.

Cape Breton will rely on All-Canadian midfielder Jose de Cunha as the stalwart of the midfield and last year’s U SPORTS leading scorer Kairo Coore for an offensive jolt.

As a rookie, UPEI’s Samuel Akinsola was the leading scorer for the Panthers, scoring four regular-season goals. The second-year student-athlete will hope to build from his successful rookie campaign and will be tested by the stout CBU defensive corps.

No. 6 Victoria Vikes @ No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds

A battle of British Columbia hits the pitch as the Victoria Vikes travel to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds in a nationally ranked tilt to open the season.

This offseason, the perennial powerhouse UBC Thunderbirds welcomed new blood to their squad with eight new recruits. Headlining the class is scrum-half, Grace Turner. Turner, who is fresh off a stint with Team B.C. at the 2022 Canada games will look to gel with an already established T-Birds roster.

On the Vikes, 2021 U SPORTS women’s rugby Rookie of the Year, Larah Wright, will be heavily involved on the offensive side. Wright led Victoria in tries (3) and points (15), while leading the Vikes to a program-best fourth-place finish in the U SPORTS National Championship.
