UBC quarterback Garrett Rooker, Montréal defensive back Nicolas Roy, and Montréal kicker Philippe Boyer are the U SPORTS football players of the week for the period ending November 19, 2023.

Offensive Player of the Week: Garrett Rooker, UBC

Garrett Rooker was named the Offensive player of the game in Saturday’s Mitchell Bowl, as his UBC Thunderbirds downed StFX 47-17. Rooker threw four touchdown passes, two in each half, as he kept the T-Birds’ quest for a fifth Vanier Cup alive. He completed 22 of his 26 pass attempts for 303 yards with no interceptions, as he led UBC’s offence to 517 total yards on the day.

Nicolas Roy made an early mark in their 29-3 victory against the Mustangs last Saturday in Montréal. The second-year defensive back did not waste any time as he made an interception two minutes into the game, paving the way for Montréal’s unbreakable defence to take over. Late in the second quarter, he was responsible for a crucial turnover by recovering a Mustangs fumble. Roy also made four tackles (two solo, four assisted), and had a sack throughout the game. His performance helped qualify the Carabins to their third Vanier Cup, where they will play the Thunderbirds for a chance to earn a second national title.

Special Teams Player of the Week: Philippe Boyer, Montréal

Philippe Boyer made all four of his field goal attempts as the Montréal Carabins shut down the Western Mustangs 29-3 in Saturday’s Uteck Bowl. Boyer’s kicks helped put scoreboard pressure on the Mustangs, and he accounted for 15 of the Carabins’ 29 points. In addition to his field goals from 20, 25, 19 and 42 yards, he added a kickoff single in the first half and made both extra point attempts. His average of 43.1 yards on seven punts also helped give the victors a consistent field position advantage.
