Jamal Mayali of McGill and Camille Scherger from the UPEI Panthers are the U SPORTS male and Female Athletes of the Week for the period ending October 6, 2019.

Male Athlete of the Week: Jamal Mayali, McGill

Mayali, a 6-foot-3, 178-pound guard, guided the men’s basketball team to a pair of preseason road victories over the weekend, winning 76-70 at Toronto on Oct. 4 and 90-74 at York on Oct. 5. The 21-year-old political science junior scored 52 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in the two games, to go along with five assists, one blocked shot and three steals. He shot an impressive 53.6 per cent from the field (15-for-28), including a 3-for-10 performance from three-point range and also shot a solid 76 per cent from the free-throw line (19-for-25).

Mayali came off the bench to score a career-high 28 points in the win over Toronto. He started in the next game at York and led the team with 24 points.

Female Athlete of the Week: Camille Scherger, UPEI

Camille Scherger of the UPEI Panthers women’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Oct. 6, 2019.

A third-year goaltender from Lloydminster, Alta., Scherger opened the AUS regular season with two shutouts this past weekend versus the UNB Reds and the Mount Allison Mounties.

In Friday night’s 2-0 win over UNB, she made an impressive 28 saves and was named Subway Player of the Game.

She followed up with a 14-save performance Saturday over the Mount Allison Mounties, backstopping UPEI to a 6-0 win.
