CHARLOTTETOWN– Ashley Stratton’s shootout goal sent the UNB Reds to the semifinals, as they defeated the McGill Martlets 5-4 in the first game of the 2022 Cavendish Farms U SPORTS Championship.

Sydney Oitomen, Jana Headrick, Jenna Maclean and Lillian George each scored for the Reds, while Laura Jardin, Marika Labrecque, Jade Downie-Landry and Makenzie McCallum countered for the Martlets.

The Reds were outshot by McGill 34-29.

The Martlets put the Reds in a hole midway through the first period when Laura Jardin and Marika Labrecque beat Woodland on goals at 8:27 and 12:03.

UNB’s Sydney Oitomen cut the deficit in half with a goal at 2:03 of the second period, but McGill responded just 59 seconds later when Jade Downie-Landry went in alone and beat Woodland blocker side to make it 3-1. The Martlets went into the second intermission ahead 4-1 after Mackenzie McCallum put away a goal with 15 seconds to go in the frame.

The Reds battled back early in the third as they scored two goals in 2:05 to make it 4-3. First it was Jenna Headrick 38 seconds in, followed by Jenna Maclean at 2:05. They would tie it up at 10:29 on a Lillian George goal to send the game to overtime.

With this win, the Reds advance to play the winner of the UBC–Nipissing game on Saturday at 4 p.m. in the semifinals, while McGill takes on the loser in the consolation. The Martlets end their season with an overall regular and post-season record of 14-7-0.
