Montreal Carabins advance after upsetting the UBC Thunderbirds 4-2

The Montreal Carabins are advancing after upsetting the UBC Thunderbirds 4-2 in the third quarterfinal at the 2024 GFL U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship presented by Connect Energy at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon, Friday.

Montreal’s second-year defender Jade Picard picked up the go-ahead goal at 13:40 of the third period to give the seventh-seed Carabins the edge over the second-seed Thunderbirds. 

The Carabins now advance to play the winner of Friday evening’s quarterfinal game between the UNB Reds and the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday at 7 p.m. (Saskatchewan time). UBC will play in a consolation game on Saturday at 1 p.m. local time.

Montreal got on the board early at 6:58 of the first period when fourth-year centre Mylene Lefebvre netted the first goal of the game against UBC goalie Elise Hugens. Jade Picard picked up her first of two assists on the goal in front of a lively crowd of 2,150. 

UBC’s Cassidy Rhodes, a second-year forward, responded at 13:45 of the first period with assists by Mackenzie Kordic and Makenzie McCallum. 

In the third period, the teams exchanged goals gain. Fourth-year Montreal forward Joannie Garand scored at 1:08 with another assist from Picard. UBC’s Sophia Gaskell, a third-year defensive player, tied it up again, at 2:38 before Picard’s eventual game-winning goal. 

Montreal’s Laure-Anne Ethier netted an open netter at 17:59 to seal the victory. 

Montreal goalie Aube Racine picked up the win in a contest in which the Carabins were outshot 26-22. Hugens made 18 saves in a losing cause for the T-Birds.
