University of Saskatchewan defenceman Brooklyn Stevely scored in just her second game back from a cancer diagnosis to help the Huskies to a 3-1 win over the St. Francis Xavier X-Women Saturday in a consolation semifinal at the 2024 GFL U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship presented by Connect Energy at Merlis Belsher Place in Saskatoon.

Game Summary

Stevely’s goal was the Huskies’ third of the game and third in the second period.  Her shot from the point found a hole through X-Women netminder and Saskatoon product Amaya Giraudier at 6:06. Stevely, who finished with a goal and an assist, returned to the ice for the U SPORTS Championship after spending the season fighting ovarian cancer, including having surgery in December.

The Huskies will face the winner of the other consolation semifinal between the UBC Thunderbirds and UNB Reds on Sunday at 10 a.m.

STFX found themselves in penalty trouble in the middle 22 minutes of the game taking four penalties and allowing the Huskies to capitalize on two of those opportunities.

Kelsey Hall opened the scoring for the Huskies. The goal ended a three-game scoreless drought for Saskatchewan at 1:22 into the second frame on the power play. Her shot beat Giraudier on the glove side. Just 2:09 later, Sophie Lalor extended the Huskies lead with a shot that beat Giraudier top shelf stick side at 3:30.  Stevely’s goal came three minutes later at 6:06.

STFX cut the lead to two in the last minute of the second period when Ashlyn Garnett found an errant puck and went on one-on-one with Huskies’ netminder Camryn Drever. Garnett’s shot flipped over the glove side shoulder of Drever at 19:15.

The X-Women had a surge in the third period to bring the game closer with multiple quality opportunities in front of the net but Canada West Goaltender of the Year, Drever, was able to keep the puck out of the net after the barrage of 19 shots in the frame. The Huskies also killed off two power plays in the period.

Drever finished the game making 37 saves in the win for the Huskies, while Giraudier made 18 at the other end of the ice for the X-Women.
