The 2019 U SPORTS Odlum Brown Swimming Championship and the 2019 U SPORTS Wrestling Championship have begun to kick off the 2019 Winter #CHAMPSZN. The UBC Thunderbirds host the Swimming Championships at the UBC Aquatic Centre, the program’s brand new, state-of-the-art-facility, which opened in 2017, while the Calgary Dinos will host the Wrestling Championships. Both events run until Saturday night.

Hockey

Playoffs heat up with exciting matchups

The men’s and women’s hockey conference playoffs are well underway, with another packed weekend of quarterfinal and semifinal matchups on tap. In men’s hockey, the Canada West and OUA semifinals matchups feature best-of-three series ending Sunday, while the AUS semifinals are a best-of-five and are scheduled to conclude on Mar.1. All teams will be looking to secure a spot in the 2019 U SPORTS Cavendish Farms University Cup hosted by Lethbridge from Mar. 14-17.

Women’s hockey is in a similar position with CW and RSEQ best-of-three semifinals running until Sunday, while AUS goes until Feb. 27. Meanwhile, the OUA best-of-three quarterfinals will wrap up Sunday as well. Spots will be on the line at the 2019 U SPORTS Women’s Hockey Championship hosted by UPEI from Mar. 14-17.

Basketball

No. 1 Laval looking to end regular season dominance on a high note

The RSEQ and AUS basketball seasons end on Saturday with a number of doubleheaders on deck. Highlighting the day, the No.1-ranked Laval Rouge et Or women will be looking to complete their season undefeated as they travel to take on McGill. Tip-off is at 4:00 p.m. ET / 1:00 p.m. PT and can be streamed here.

Playoff action is also hitting the hardwood as the CW and OUA division semifinals begin this week. Best-of-three action tipped off Wednesday out west, while in Ontario it’s down to single game showdowns for a chance at the Final 8 tournaments being held in Halifax and Toronto at Ryerson.

Volleyball

First serve flies on postseason

The men’s and women’s volleyball playoffs begin with CW quarterfinals and RSEQ semifinals, both in a best-of-three format going until Sunday. On the men’s side, the No. 2 Trinity Western Spartans host the defending U SPORTS champion and No. 9 UBC Thunderbirds in a rematch of last year’s national final while the No. 8 Saskatchewan Huskies visit the No. 6 Mount Royal Cougars.

The OUA regular season also comes to a close Saturday, with the Ryerson Rams looking to secure second place in the east division from Toronto. Unfortunately, the Rams will have their hands full, going up against No .5 McMaster who have only lost twice this season. The match begins at 4:00 p.m. ET / 1:00 p.m. PT.

Track and field Championships on deck

The track and field conference championships kick off this weekend with hosts Alberta (CW), York (OUA), McGill (RSEQ), and Moncton (AUS) ready to welcome the best prior to the national championships. Plenty of competition will be showing up as the top student-athletes in the country look to take home first place and secure qualifying times to the national meet in Winnipeg on Friday and Saturday.
