WOLFVILLE, N.S. (U SPORTS) – Simon Lafrance’s three assists propelled the UQTR Patriotes to a decisive 7-2 victory over the Rams on Saturday to clinch a spot in the finals at the 2022 U SPORTS Cavendish Farms University Cup at the Andrew H. McCain Arena.

Justin Bergeron, Olivier Garneau, Julien Tessier, David Nöel, Félix Sabourin-Lauzon, Jordan Martel, and Samuel Hould scored for the Patriotes in the lopsided victory. Jeremiah Addison and Chris Playfair scored in a losing cause for the Ryerson Rams.

“We are really proud of all the work and effort we have done over the last couple of years to bring the program back to the final. It’s a huge accomplishment for our group of student-athletes. We are really proud of what they did. The group has been on a mission since day one and they have given us a chance to play in the finals. It’s a huge accomplishment,” said Patriotes head coach Marc-Étienne Hubert who is in his eight season with UQTR.

The Patriotes divvied up their offense on the night, with seven separate goal scorers helping the team secure their spot in the University Cup finals tomorrow. UQTR added three power-play markers on the night, going 2-for-5, while the Ryerson Rams went 1-for-3.

"We've made sacrifices for 2 years to reach this goal,” said forward Olivier Garneau. ”Now we have to rest for the biggest game of the year."

Despite stunning the perennial powerhouse UNB REDS in the first round, the Rams were unable to continue that momentum. They held in close with UQTR in the first period, but the Patriotes pulled away with five goals in the final two frames.

The UQTR Patriotes led in shots as well, as they outshot the Ryerson Rams 43-31.

With the win, UQTR advances to play the Alberta Golden Bears tomorrow at 6:30 PM ET/3:30 PM PT in the Gold Medal Game, while Ryerson takes on the StFX X-Men for bronze 3 at 12:00 PM ET/9:00 AM PT.
