CHARLOTTETOWN (U SPORTS)—The UNB REDS had full control of Friday’s second quarter-final game but barely escaped with a 2-1 win over the Concordia Stingers to advance to the semifinals.

Simon Pinard scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period to put his team on top. Cody Morgan also scored in the win, while Concordia’s lone goal came from Phélix Martineau.

UNB’s strong forechecking led to a nice goal midway through the opening period. A pair of REDS battled along the end boards and got the puck in front to Morgan, who made a quick move on goaltender Jonathan Lemieux before sliding one by him for a 1-0 lead.

Despite being outplayed for most of the game, Concordia managed to tie it on a power play goal at 15:20 when Charles Tremblay pushed a short pass to Martineau, who wired a wrist shot in the top left corner.

The REDS took the definitive lead five minutes into the third period when Michael Petizian passed it off the end boards to Pinard, who roofed it in.

UNB’s Simon Pinard was relatively untested, as the rookie netminder faced just 14 shots, while Lemieux was the reason the game was as close it was, as he turned aside 23 shots.
