UBC’s Hugens and Paquette of RMC named U SPORTS Hockey Players of the Week

Elise Hugens, UBC

  • Position: Goalie
  • Hometown: Sherwood Park, Alta.
  • Year of Eligibility: Third
  • Academic Program: Kinesiology

Elise Hugens of the University of British Columbia's Thunderbirds is named the U SPORTS female hockey player of the week. Hugens had an outstanding performance in the Thunderbirds two most recent games this past Friday and Saturday against the University of Alberta’s Pandas. Hugens made 26 saves on 27 shots in Friday’s game leading the Thunderbirds to a 2-1 shootout win against the Pandas. Stepping back onto the ice to rematch the Panda’s on Saturday, Hugens once again made an impressive 22 saves on 23 shots and the Thunderbirds took home the sweep with a 3-1 win.

Thunderbirds play their next game this Friday and Saturday as they visit Mount Royal at the Flames Community Arenas.

Chris Paquette, Royal Military College

  • Year of Eligibility: 4th
  • Academic Program: Military Arts & Science

Chris Paquette of the Royal Military College Paladins had a phenomenal couple of games this past weekend. The Paladins kicked their weekend off playing Laurier, where Paquette scored his 14th goal of the season in a 5-2 loss for the Paladins. However, Paquette broke out in a big way on Saturday against Waterloo. He scored five points, including a hat trick and two assists and scored the overtime winner in a 7-6 win over the Warriors.

The Paladins’ next game is the annual Carr-Harris Cup game against Queen’s on Thursday night.
