Monday Morning Quarterback: Gee-Gees start women’s soccer OUA and U SPORTS title defence with 1-0 win over Ridgebacks
The defending U SPORTS champion Ottawa Gee-Gees and StFX X-Women are the teams to beat in the first women’s soccer and women’s rugby rankings of the season.
Fresh off a 20-1-1 combined mark last year in the OUA regular season and playoffs and national championship action, the Gee-Gees entered the 2019 campaign with their first U SPORTS title since 1996 thanks to a 2-1 victory on home field over the Trinity Western Spartans.
On Saturday, Ottawa picked up right where it left off with a 1-0 season-opening road win over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks. The Gee-Gees last held the No.1 ranking in the final two weeks of the 2014 season (Oct. 21 and 28, 2014). They’ll host crosstown rival Carleton on Wednesday – the first matchup between the two sides since 2017 – before visiting Toronto and Trent on the weekend.
In women’s rugby, the X-Women posted a 7-0 mark in 2018 in AUS and U SPORTS play, en route to their sixth national title and fifth since 2010 – thanks to 41-24 victory over Guelph. StFX was last at No.1 on Oct. 24, 2017 – the final rankings of the year heading into its 2017 national championship run. The X-Women defeated Acadia in a pair of preseason games on Saturday and will visit UPEI in its season opener this weekend.
