CBC Sports becomes exclusive English-language digital broadcaster of U SPORTS National Championships through 2025
The Western Mustangs and defending champion Laval Rouge et Or begin the season as the teams to beat in U SPORTS football and women’s rugby.
In a rematch of the 2019 OUA Yates Cup championship, the Mustangs kicked off their season beating the McMaster Marauders 41-13 at home on Saturday. The reigning Vanier Cup champion Calgary Dinos and finalist Montreal Carabins, follow at No. 2 and 3 respectively. The Carabins defeated RSEQ rival Laval Rouge et Or 18-17, while the Dinos (idle) begin their title defence hosting the Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday.
In women’s rugby, the U SPORTS champion Rouge et Or (2-0) picked up a narrow 8-7 victory over the national bronze medalist Ottawa Gee-Gees (1-1).
In men’s soccer, the Montreal Carabins (2-0-0) took over top spot, thanks to a 3-1 win at Sherbrooke on Friday, after the Cape Breton Capers (2-1-0) split a weekend set, falling to the UNB Reds 4-2 on Saturday. In women’s soccer, Calgary (4-0-0) remains at No. 1 for another week.
