First serve officially flies on the U SPORTS volleyball season, with the defending men’s national champion UBC - fresh off their first title since 1983 - looking to continue their success in a two-game series against Alberta. With a new interim coach in Mike Hawkins, and four stand-out players signing pro contracts in Europe, the Thunderbirds will have to work as a team to sweep the series from the Golden Bears. The series begins Friday at 10:30 p.m. ET / 7:30 p.m. PT and wraps up Saturday night at 9:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. PT on CanadaWest.TV.

On the women’s side, the four-time RSEQ champion Montreal Carabins opened their season against Ottawa on Thursday night and will host Sherbrooke on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET / 10:00 a.m. PT.

U of T to face Guelph in final week of regular season play

The top-seeded Toronto Varsity blues are set to host the Guelph Gryphons on Sunday  in the last weekend of play before the conference playoffs. The Blues will look to continue their dominant season against one of their conference rivals, and hold off the York Lions for top seed in the conference heading into the OUA championship next week. Meanwhile, UBC's eighth consecutive national title potential is all on the line this weekend as against the Calgary Dinos in the final Canada West regular season games. The Thunderbirds need to win both games against Calgary and score a wealth of goals to take first place over Victoria. Catch the action at 2:00 p.m. ET/ 11:00 a.m. PT on both Saturday and Sunday.

Gee-Gees look to remain undefeated going into RSEQ championship

The No. 1 Ottawa Gee-Gees women's rugby team will head into the post-season undefeated this weekend ahead of the RSEQ semifinals. With the 2018 RSEQ Rookie of the Year, Claire Gallagher and five newly-named RSEQ First Team All-Stars on their side, it will not be an easy battle for the 4-3 Sherbrooke Vert & Or. The winner of the match will be guaranteed a spot at the U SPORTS national championship tournament. The game begins on Friday at 5:00 p.m. / 2:00 p.m. PT on OUA.TV.

No. 4 Guelph to battle it out with No. 5 Queen’s in OUA championship

The Gryphons will look to keep their season undefeated as they face their conference rivals, the Queen’s Gaels, in the OUA championship match. The Gryphons, who have six OUA All-Stars and the conference Coach of the Year will look to capture their third straight OUA title in their 11th straight appearance in the title match. Capers enter penultimate week still undefeated

Ranked No. 2 in the nation, the Cape Breton Capers sit at 7-0-2 and are preparing to host Dan Hayfield and the StFX X-Men (6-2-1) on Friday night at 6:15 p.m. ET / 3:15 p.m. PT. Marcus Campanile and Stuart Heath will be expected to spark the black and orange's balanced offence, while more stellar play will be expected from goalkeeper Ben Jackson. This edition of the classic Nova Scotian rivalry may provide foreshadowing to a possible AUS final matchup. Following a day of recovery, the Capers will travel to Sackville, N.B., to face the 0-9 Mount Allison Mounties on Sunday at 2:15 p.m. ET / 11:15 a.m. PT. Both games can be seen on AUStv.ca.

No. 1 Spartans face off in CW showdown

The top-ranked Trinity Western Spartans will face off against the fourth-ranked UBC Thunderbirds as they wrap up the regular season this weekend. The Spartans who have an 11-1-0 record are coming off a 7-0 win against Mount Royal where Seina Kashima broke the CW’s single season assists record. She also holds the record for most career assists.
